ECZEMA OR ATOPIC DERMATITIS

Atopic dermatitis, or better known as “eczema”, is a common skin disease in both adults and children. It is a long-lasting non-communicable disease that causes intense itching and tends to flare periodically and then subside. There is currently no cure for the disease.

OCCURRENCE OF DISEASE

In most cases, atopic dermatitis begins in the first months of a person’s life, i.e. when infant, at a percentage of 65% or in childhood before age 5 at a percentage of 90%, but also in puberty at a percentage of 75%. Atopic dermatitis usually subsides as children get older, but in some cases it may persist in adulthood.

SIGNS OF DISEASE

In atopic dermatitis, the person experiences repeated inflammations of the skin and intense itching. There are periods of time when the disease is worse, known as flares, and periods when it subsides, known as remissions (during which the skin appears to be normal). Intense itching may cause secondary infections caused by bacteria and fungi, which may “invade” the skin that has been broken due to scratching.

Atopic dermatitis may occur in any part of the body, but certain body areas are more easily affected.

CAUSES OF THE DISEASE

The exact causes of the disease are still unknown, but it has been found that long-lasting atopic dermatitis is a combination of interactions between the following:

  • Skin barrier defect
  • Absence of lipids on the skin surface
  • Immune factors
  • Environmental factors
  • Genetic predisposition

SYMPTOMS

Redness, Dryness, Itching, Blisters – Oozing lesions (Acute Phase), Scales – Crusted skin (Subacute Phase), Lichenification (Chronic Phase)
