Why Does Acne Often Worsen in Summer?
For some people acne becomes more noticeable in the warmer months — here is why, and how a simple routine can help keep skin comfortable.
For some people, acne becomes more noticeable during the warmer months. Heat, humidity and increased sweating can cause sweat to mix with oil, bacteria and product residue on the skin, which may clog pores and trigger breakouts.
Keep sweat from sitting on the skin
After exercise or heavy sweating, gently pat the skin dry with a clean towel and cleanse as soon as practical. Avoid rubbing, scrubbing or repeatedly touching the face, as friction can irritate acne-prone skin.
Choose products carefully
Use gentle, non-comedogenic skin-care products and a broad-spectrum sunscreen suitable for acne-prone skin. Ingredients such as salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide may be useful for some people, but they should be introduced gradually and used according to the product instructions.
Keep the routine simple
Cleanse gently, moisturise with a lightweight product suited to your skin type and protect your skin from the sun. If breakouts are painful, persistent or worsening, consult a dermatologist for an individual treatment plan.
Summer does not have to mean more acne. A consistent routine and prompt cleansing after sweating can help keep the skin comfortable and balanced.
