How to Choose the Right Sunscreen
An effective sunscreen provides broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB — here is how to choose one you will actually use.
An effective sunscreen should provide broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB radiation. For everyday use, choose a product with SPF 30 or higher and a texture that suits your skin type and routine.
Look for broad-spectrum protection
SPF primarily indicates the level of protection against UVB radiation, which is associated with sunburn. Broad-spectrum labelling confirms that the product also provides UVA protection, helping protect against longer-term sun damage.
Choose a formula you will use consistently
People with oily or acne-prone skin may prefer lightweight, non-comedogenic textures, while dry skin may benefit from a more moisturising cream. Water-resistant sunscreen is useful when swimming, exercising or sweating.
Apply enough and reapply
Apply sunscreen generously to exposed skin before going outdoors. Reapply at least every two hours and after swimming, heavy sweating or towel drying. Sunscreen should be used together with shade, protective clothing and a hat.
The best sunscreen is one that provides appropriate broad-spectrum protection and that you are comfortable applying correctly and consistently.
