How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?
There is no single hair-washing schedule that suits everyone — the right frequency depends on your scalp, hair type, lifestyle and styling routine.
There is no single hair-washing schedule that suits everyone. The right frequency depends on how quickly your scalp becomes oily or dirty, as well as your hair type, lifestyle and styling routine.
Choose a frequency that suits your scalp and hair
People with straight hair or an oily scalp may prefer to shampoo daily or every other day. Dry, thick, curly or textured hair generally needs less frequent washing to avoid unnecessary dryness. The aim is to keep the scalp clean and comfortable without stripping moisture from the hair.
Wash gently and focus on the scalp
Apply shampoo mainly to the scalp and massage gently with your fingertips. When rinsing, allow the lather to flow through the lengths rather than rubbing the hair vigorously. Follow with conditioner to help improve softness, manageability and protection against breakage.
Do not confuse washing with hair loss
Normal shedding often becomes more visible on wash days because loose hairs are released together. Shampooing itself is not usually the cause of hair loss. Sudden, persistent or excessive shedding should be assessed by a dermatologist, as hair loss can have many different causes.
A consistent routine, a suitable shampoo and gentle handling are more important than following a fixed number of washes per week.
